Using Backend & Realtime in a game

You create games in your Gamedonia account. The games you create can “have backend”, can “have realtime”, or both.

FAQ

  • Can I use both Backend and Realtime with just one account? Yes you can! Your account gives you access to both services.
  • Can I use just Backend or just Realtime? Yes you can! You can use our services independently.
  • Can my games use both Backend and Realtime at the same time? Absolutely! We built Gamedonia so you could use both on your games.
  • Do I need to use Backend in order to use Realtime, or vice versa? Nope. You can use our services independently.

Fast track

Simply click on any game with backend to import it and add realtime to it. It will be added to games with realtime. This works the other way around if you want to add backend to a game with realtime. Only that we’ll have to do it from the backend dashboard.

Complete walkthrough

Let me show you how this works from end to end.

We sign up for Gamedonia and land on the Backend dashboard. It would work the same way if we signed up for Gamedonia from the Realtime site, and therefore landed in the Realtime dashboard.

Add backend to game

Say we first add backend to the game named Car Racing which we’re making with Unity. We may now complete the game integration and work on the game in Gamedonia, or not, it won’t matter for the purpose of this example. Then we decide to start a new project and add a new game named Platformer we’re developing with Cocos2d-x.

Notice we have two games with backend we can build for in Gamedonia.

Accessing Realtime (or Backend)

Now we want to try Gamedonia Realtime and access it via the top menu. Because it’s the first time we access the realtime dashboard, we need to acknowledge that we’ll be using a free plan and move on to adding Realtime to a game.

Add realtime to game

So, we have yet another project, and we add realtime to a game named Funny Shooter we’ll develop with Unity. Up until this point the process is the same every time we've created a game in Gamedonia.

Notice we have one “game with realtime”, and below are shown the games with backend you’re developing with a platform Gamedonia has an SDK for Realtime. Currently we only offer Unity SDK for Realtime, that’s why this only shows Car Racing (Unity) and not Platformer (Cocos2d-x).

Add realtime to a game with backend (or viceversa)

How to add realtime to a game you have in Gamedonia that already has backend?

Simply click on any game with backend to import it and add realtime to it. It will be added to games with realtime.

You could do the exact opposite (add backend to a game with realtime) from the realtime dashbaord.

So now we have these three games:

Game

Platform

Backend

Realtime

Car Racing

Unity

Yes

Yes

Platformer

Cocos2d-x

Yes

No

Funny Shooter

Unity

No

Yes

If we’d like to add backend to our Funny Shooter all we need to do is head back to the backend dashboard and go to games with backend. Funny Shooter will show up as a game with realtime we can easily import to backend with just one click.

That's it!
